The Hayes Peninsula ( Danish Hayes Halvø ) is an approximately 100 km long peninsula in northwest Greenland. It separates the Kane Basin , part of the Nares Strait , in the north from Baffin Bay in the south. The peninsula is in turn divided into two roughly equal halves by the deeply cutting Inglefield Fjord .
Administratively, the Hayes Peninsula belongs to the large commune of Avannaata Kommunia ; on it lie the places Qaanaaq , Siorapaluk and Moriusaq , the abandoned settlements Etah and Annoatok , as well as the Thule Air Base . In the south of the peninsula is Cape York , which is the north-western limit of Melville Bay . In the west of the peninsula is Cape Alexander ( Ullersuaq ), the westernmost point of Greenland . The region north of Cape Alexander is Inglefield Land .
The peninsula is named after the US polar explorer Isaac Israel Hayes , who explored this region in the mid-19th century.
