The Healey Silverstone is a car model of the British sports car manufacturer Donald Healey Motor Company . The company was founded in 1945 by the engineer and rally driver Donald Healey . The Silverstone was introduced in 1949 and production began at the end of the year. The car is under the then newly opened race track in Silverstone , the Silverstone Circuit , named.

engine

The 4-cylinder in- line engine from Riley with 2443 cm³ displacement is installed lengthways at the front; it develops 106 bhp (79 kW) at 4500 rpm. As was customary in British engine construction at that time, it was designed with a long stroke (bore 80.5 mm, stroke 120 mm), the compression ratio was 6.84: 1.

design

The body was designed by Len Hedges from Panelcraft . The headlights are hidden behind the radiator grille and the front wheels protrude from the body, similar to a Formula 1 racing car. The fenders can be removed and the windshield can be folded down to reduce drag during races. There's no rear bumper to save weight. Instead, the spare wheel is in an open compartment and protrudes over the body contour to the rear.

chassis

The chassis is designed as a box frame . The front suspension consists of double trailing arms with coil springs and a stabilizer . The upper trailing arms also operate the lever shock absorbers . Rear is a rigid axle with Halbelliptik springs and Panhard rod installed. All four wheels have Lockheed drum brakes. There are two types of chassis. Type D corresponds to the normal version, but the motor sits approx. 7 cm further back in the chassis. It was replaced by the type E, which offered more comfort. The body is slightly wider and there is a little more legroom. Externally, versions with E specification differ in their larger windshield.

Performance

The Silverstone reached a top speed of over 170 km / h and accelerated from 0 to 100 km / h in 11 seconds.

number of pieces

The British specialist company Abbey Panel & Sheet Metal Co took over the production of the body and the final assembly of the cars . A total of five prototypes and 106 series cars (51 of the type D and 54 of the type E) were built. Production ended in September 1950. The Healey Silverstone was £ 975 for the 33 1/3% tax rate to apply. For cars that cost more than £ 1000, 66 2/3% tax was then payable.

Afterwards, some owners have rebuilt Healey models other than Silverstone ("Silverstone Replica").

Sports

In 1949 a Silverstone with a Cadillac V8 (5.4 liter) was used in races by Briggs Cunningham in the USA. A Healey Silverstone Special (with Nash -Sechszylindermotor) was in 1950 when 24-hour race of Le Mans at the start. The team Tony Rolt ( GB ) / Duncan Hamilton ( IRE ) finished fourth. A Healey Elliott with the team Nigel Mann (GB) / Mortimer Morris-Goddall (GB) crossed the finish line in 19th place overall after 24 hours.
