The Hebbel Museum in Wesselburen ( Dithmarschen district , Schleswig-Holstein ) is dedicated to the life and work of the playwright Friedrich Hebbel (1813–1863), who was born here .

history

The museum was founded in 1911 on the upper floor of a house on Süderstrasse. One of the initiators was the ethnically oriented writer Adolf Bartels . Since 1952 the museum has been located in the Alte Kirchspielvogtei , an 18th century building in which Friedrich Hebbel lived and worked for seven years. The old parish bailiwick , the former residence and official seat of the parish bailiffs , was bought and restored by the city in 1949.

Furnishing

The museum has the world's largest special library on Hebbel with over 6000 works. It is based on a collection of the museum's founder Engelhard Herwig, who handed it over to the city of Wesselburen in 1911 against reimbursement of expenses. Ten historical rooms show furniture, household items, pictures and documents. The Wiener Zimmer presents Hebbel's lifestyle in its most successful phase. A Hebbelgesellschaft research center is attached to the building.

scholarship

The city of Wesselburen regularly awards a doctoral scholarship for the scientific development of Friedrich Hebbel's work. The scholarship holders undertake to work in the museum during this time.
