The hedge warbler ( Cercotrichas galactotes , syn .: Erythropygia galactotes ) is a species of bird from the genus Cercotrichas within the family of the flycatcher (Muscicapidae).
description
It becomes a good 15 centimeters long, is slender, relatively long-legged for a flycatcher and quite similar to a thrush. You can quickly recognize it by its long, chestnut-brown fan tail, which is lined with a wide black and white tip. The upper side is colored brown-red to brown-gray. The hedge warbler also has a pronounced cream-colored stripe above the eyes and a sand-colored underside.
Subspecies and their distribution
The subspecies Cercotrichas galactotes familiaris ( Ménétriés , 1832) occurs in Transcaucasia , southeastern Turkey, Iraq, and northeastern and eastern Saudi Arabia east to southern Kazakhstan , eastern Iran , eastern Afghanistan and western Pakistan .
In the case of the subspecies Cercotrichas galactotes galactotes ( Temminck , 1820), the entire upper side is foxy brown-red. It is found in the Iberian Peninsula , North Africa, Israel and southwestern Syria and has breeded in southern France.
In the subspecies Cercotrichas galactotes syriaca ( Hemprich & Ehrenberg , 1833) the chestnut brown is limited to the rump and tail, the rest of the upper side is gray-brown. It is common in the Balkans and Greece , western and southern Turkey , western Syria and Lebanon .
In addition, two African subspecies Cercotrichas galactotes hamertoni ( Ogilvie-Grant , 1906) and Cercotrichas galactotes minor ( Cabanis , 1850) are distinguished.
Way of life
The hedge warbler lives in gardens, vineyards, palm and olive groves. It sits conspicuously on bushes and on the ground with drooping wings and erects its long, fanned tail vertically. Often he behaves very secretly, but is not particularly shy. He sings in the open, on telephone wires or in slow, descending flight. The song, which is somewhat reminiscent of the skylark , is very pleasant, but broken and changing in scope. His call is a tough "teck". Hedge warriors live on worms , ants , beetles and fruits . The nest is in hedges of opuntia and palm bushes. It is made of grass and twigs about two meters above the ground and padded with plant fibers and occasionally parts of snake skin. It is a migratory bird and migrates to more southerly areas in winter.
