The Hegyközer narrow-gauge railway (Hungarian. Hegyközi Kisvasút ) was a narrow-gauge railway in northeast Hungary . In November 1980 the traffic was stopped and the route dismantled. It last ran on the route Balsa - Sárospatak - Sátoraljaújhely - Füzérkomlós .

history

In 1913 the Bodrogközer Railway Company built the line from Cigánd on the Tisza to the northeast via Zemplénagárd to Királyhelmec . Soon this was extended from Cigánd to the west to Sárospatak and from this a branch line was built to the bank of the Tisza at Kenézlő . After the Treaty of Trianon in 1920, which awarded Czechoslovakia the northern Hungarian territories, Zemplénagárd became the terminus instead of Királyhelmec. As a result of the treaty, it became very difficult to reach Hegyköz (the area around Sátoraljaújhely ) from Hungary. This is how plans arose to expand the small railway line like a network.

In 1924, the section between the border town Sátoraljaújhely and Pálháza was initially built as an independent route , which was extended to Füzérkomlós at the end of the year . The connecting piece (Sárospatak – Sátoraljaújhely) running parallel to the standard gauge was built in 1927 and thus connected the line built in 1924 with the rest of the light rail network. An important step was the construction of the railway bridge over the Tisza near Balsa, with which the small railway could be extended from Kenézlő to Balsa, where it connected to the Nyírvidék narrow-gauge railway towards Nyíregyháza .

After the First Vienna Arbitration Award in 1938, Királyhelmec came back to Hungary, so that the place received a Hungarian rail connection again until the end of the war in 1944. In 1945 the German Wehrmacht blew up the Balsa bridge, which interrupted the connection to Nyíregyháza. The Tisza Bridge was never rebuilt. Nowadays a ferry passes the river here.

From 1949 rail traffic on the Kenézlő – Zemplénagárd section was discontinued. Steam operation was stopped in 1964 and the Mk48 and Mk45 diesel locomotives were used.

The Hegyközer Kleinbahn was an important regional carrier in passenger and freight traffic and offered some jobs. The railway line was included in the 1968 Hungarian general transport plan. At the end of 1976 the section of the state border - Zemplénagárd was dismantled. On November 29, 1980 the operation of the entire narrow-gauge railway was stopped, a few days later the demolition of the entire railway line began.

The Pálháza Forest Railway, which is owned by MÁV and branched off from the Hegyköz narrow-gauge railway, has been used for tourism since 1989. It is interesting that in 1996 the forest railway line on the embankment of the Hegyköz narrow-gauge railway was extended to Pálházá and part of the line was rebuilt.

In addition, some structures (Bodrog Bridge) and other traces are reminiscent of the old narrow-gauge railway line.
