The MAV series Mk48 is a 1958 developed and in large numbers to the number in the track performed by 760 millimeters narrow-gauge railways of the Hungarian State Railways Magyar Államvasutak (MÁV) and the numerous forest paths supplied diesel locomotive . The modernized machines are still used in large numbers today.

history

Mk48 1005, the only surviving locomotive with mechanical power transmission

The Mk48 was created from 1958 as a narrow-gauge variant of the MÁV series M28 from the same manufacturer Rába from Győr . In contrast to the standard gauge variant, which was developed as a two-axle locomotive powered by coupling rods, the narrow-gauge locomotive was built with two bogies in the B'B 'axle sequence and powered by cardan shafts . The locomotive with the class Raba M 040 was developed in 1958 with diesel-mechanical power transmission . Twelve copies of this variant were built. They proved themselves in their trials with very good running properties, the mechanical gearbox proved to be the weak point of their construction.

The second series with hydrodynamic power transmission was built by Voith from 1960 to 1961. A total of 39 locomotives of this design were created, which were given the designation Mk 48 2001-2039 . The locomotives proved to be able to cope with any operational load due to their minimal curve radius of 50 m. Most of the hydrodynamic locomotives are still in use today. The locomotives with mechanical power transmission were retired except for the Mk 48 1005 . This locomotive was a monument locomotive in Szeged , was reactivated and is now in use on the Csömödér forest railway . Only a few of the hydrodynamic locomotives have been retired. The Mk 48 2019 was in use on the Zillertal Railway.

technical description

Photo of the Mk 48.2021 as a hybrid locomotive

In contrast to the original M 28 locomotive, the locomotive was equipped with an off-center driver's cab and a large and small front end. The entire machine system and auxiliary systems were housed in the large front section, and the battery for the electrical system in the rear. In the driver's cab, the control stations were installed on both sides of the locomotive.

The machinery consisted of a six-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine and the power transmission, which was diesel-mechanical in the M 040 series and hydrodynamic in the M 041 series . Some vehicles had a Ganz-Jendrassik engine . From the 1970s onwards, only Raba engines with 147 kW were installed in the locomotives; these were built under license from MAN . The machines had an on-board network of 24 V, the voltage was generated by a generator . The locomotives had a compressed air network of 8 bar. The coupling device is a funnel coupling .

Two locomotives were converted into hybrid locomotives . One runs under the number Mk 48 2021 on the Lillafüred forest railway , the other is used with an unknown number on the Szalajka railway .
