Hegylos

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hegylos ( Greek  Ἡγύλος ) was a Greek wood carver from Sparta who lived around 550 BC. Was active.

At the time of Pausanias (2nd century AD) a group of statues signed by him and his son Theocles was in the treasury of the Epidamnians in the Zeus sanctuary Olympia . The group was made of cedar and showed Heracles , the bearer of the heavens Atlas and the tree of the Hesperides with the snake.

In the Heraion in Olympia there was a group of five Hesperides , which were only signed by Theocles, but are considered to be the original part of the group from the treasury. Since Theocles signed the five Hesperides statues alone and was also known as a pupil of Dipoinos and Skyllis, it is assumed that he was the more important of the two artists. It is possible that Hegylos only acted as an assistant to his son.
