The Heidelberg island is an island in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . It measures approximately 180 meters from west to east and 80 meters from north to south. It is located in the Fildes Strait between the Fildes Peninsula on King George Island (120 meters north) and the Stansbury Peninsula on Nelson Island (220 meters south). The island is thus located in the Argentine , British and Chilean Antarctic Territories . However, these territorial claims have been suspended since the Antarctic Treaty was signed in 1961.
In 1984 the island was mapped and named by a German expedition of scientists from the universities of Heidelberg , Karlsruhe and Berlin .
