Heike Fassbender

Heike Faßbender (* 1963 ) is a German mathematician and university professor . She is a professor at the Institute for Numerical Mathematics at the Technical University of Braunschweig and was the first woman to head the Society for Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (GAMM) as president from 2017 to 2019 .

life and work

Fassbender studied mathematics at Bielefeld University with a diploma. From 1989 to 1991 she studied computer science with a Fulbright scholarship at the University at Buffalo and earned a master’s degree. She then worked as a research assistant at the University of Bremen , where she did her doctorate in 1994 with Angelika Bunse-Gerstner and Ludwig F. Elsner with the dissertation: Numerical method for discrete trigonometric polynomial approximation. After completing her habilitation in 1999, she was appointed professor at the Technical University of Munich in 2000 . Since 2002 she has been Professor of Numerical Mathematics at the Technical University of Braunschweig . From 2008 to 2012 she was Vice President for Teaching, Studies and Further Education. From 2017 to 2019 she was President of the Society for Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (GAMM).
