Heiko Brunken

Heiko Brunken is a German biologist and professor of ecology and nature conservation at the University of Bremen .

Career

Heiko Brunken studied biology at the Technical University of Braunschweig and received his doctorate there on " propagation dynamics of Noemacheilus barbatulus (Linnaeus, 1758) ". He then worked there in the field of running water and fish ecology in teaching and founded the fish ecology working group at the TU Braunschweig.

He then gained scientific and professional experience at the Senckenberg Research Institute , in Frankfurt am Main (Ichthyology II Section near Lelek), in the environmental administration of the Helmstedt district and the city of Königslutter am Elm . He also works in environmental consulting (river basin management, water restoration ) at F&N UmweltConsult, Hanover . He also ran environmental education and was a speaker on the subject of water protection and fish ecology.

Brunken has been Professor of Ecology and Nature Conservation at the Bremen University of Applied Sciences since 2000 and teaches primarily in the international degree course in Technical and Applied Biology (ISTAB) (BSc and MSc). He taught at the Brazilian University UFPE on the subject of biogeography and supports environmental education projects in the field of water protection.

Scientific commitment

Heiko Brunken is a founding member of the Gesellschaft für Ichthyologie eV (GfI). He initiated the project "Digital Fish Species Atlas of Germany and Austria" and is the founder of the "Meetings of the Society for Ichthyology eV (GfI)" as a continuation of the symposia on ecology, ethology and systematics of fish.

He advocates cooperation with universities and institutions in northeastern Brazil , especially in the state of Pernambuco . He works on the mapping and documentation of the fish biodiversity of Pernambuco together with the universities UFRPE, UFPE and UPE in Recife as well as the local state environmental agency CPRH.
