Heiko Mell

Heiko Mell (born September 4, 1942 in Kolmar ) is a German personnel consultant , book author and freelancer for VDI-Nachrichten . He is responsible for the career advice series within VDI-Nachrichten, in which he has been answering questions sent to him by engineers about career planning every week since 1984 . Among other things, he tries to make the perspective of employers understandable to readers and to derive recommendations for career-relevant decisions.

As a speaker, he is often present at VDI events on questions of practical engineering training.

Life

Mell grew up as a refugee child from the eastern territories in the Soviet occupation zone and later GDR and attended high school there up to the 10th grade . His father died in World War II and his mother in 1957. He then moved to live with his grandmother in Meckenheim , who took over his guardianship.

He completed a two-year internship in mechanical engineering, attended engineering school and earned a degree in industrial engineering . He then worked for Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz AG for five years , most recently as Head of Human Resources. When his superior went into business for himself as a personnel consultant, Mell joined his company at the age of twenty-six and later became a partner and then sole owner of what is now Heiko Mell & Co GmbH in Rösrath .

Mell wrote several books on career planning and recruiting. Since 2004 he has had an honorary doctorate from Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg , where he has been giving lectures on "rules of the game" for application, job and career since 1996. In April 2016, Mell received the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon for his career advice in the VDI-Nachrichten .

Mell is married and has two sons.
