The Cathedral on the Blood ( Russian Храм на Крови ; occasionally also referred to in German as the Holy Blood Cathedral, Blood Church or All Saints Church) is a Russian Orthodox cathedral in Yekaterinburg . It was built from 2002 to 2003 on the spot where the tsarist family was murdered in 1918 in the aftermath of the October Revolution .

history

The Ipatiev House, owned by a local citizen, has stood on the site of the church since the late 1880s . After the requisition by the Bolsheviks at the end of April 1918, the Tsar's family (Tsar Nicholas II with the Tsarina, five children and some servants) were held in the house for special use and then executed on the spot on July 17, 1918. The house served various museum and political purposes in the further course of Soviet history until it was demolished overnight in July 1977. Boris Yeltsin , the then local party secretary of Yekaterinburg and later Russian president, ordered the destruction by order of the Moscow Politburo. This was supposed to prevent the emergence of an unpopular tourist attraction. Shortly after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, an orthodox chapel was planned on the site , and in 2000 the plan for the cathedral, which was built shortly afterwards in the neo-Byzantine style, was made .
