The Holy Spirit Basilica ( Spanish Basílica del Espíritu Santo ) is a Roman Catholic church in the northern Palermo district of Buenos Aires , the capital of Argentina . The Church of the Parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe belongs to the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires and has the rank of minor basilica .

history

In 1890 a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe was consecrated and belonged to the Figueroa family. In 1894, when the first missionaries of the Society of the Divine Word ( Steyler missionaries ) arrived in Buenos Aires, the bishop offered them the chapel as their headquarters. In 1896 the Vice Parish of Guadalupe was founded. But soon this chapel was too small for the growing parishioners. Therefore, the missionaries started building a new church in 1901. The church was opened in 1907 and consecrated to the Holy Spirit . In 1939 Pope Pius XII raised the church to the rank of minor basilica. In 2000 the building was completely restored.

architecture

The three-aisled church was designed on a hill in the neo-Romanesque style in the style of a basilica on the plan of a Latin cross. The entrance area has a 54 meter high double tower facade to the Plaza Güemes, the other cross ends are closed off with round apses . The basilica has a length of 53 meters and a width of 20 meters in the central nave and 43 meters in the transept. The interior height is 18 meters. The high vaults with wide round arches rest on slender pillars made of Belgian granite. A flat dome rises above the crossing. The lighting comes from magnificent stained glass windows from France. Walls and vaults are extensively painted. A calvary group was installed above the entrance portal . The bell towers formed by elegant columns each have church tower clocks from Germany, one with a ringing of three small bells. The big peal with five mighty bells was cast by the Bochum association .
