Holy Spirit Church Borken

The Heilig-Geist-Kirche in Borken is a listed building in Borken in the Münsterland . It was part of a poor inn and served as a chapel for the inmates of the Heilig-Geist-Hospital Borken until 1809. The brick Gothic style facades are unique in Westmünsterland .

history

In 1333 the hospital was donated to the Holy Spirit, around 1400 the construction of the church was completed after Bishop Heidenreich Wolf von Lüdinghausen had given his approval in 1382. The hospital had been the poor foundation of the city of Borken since the Middle Ages and the church served as a chapel for its inmates. In the Holy Roman Empire , there were over 350 arms guest houses.

The religious turmoil at the end of the 16th century caused the altar and pulpit to deteriorate into an "undignified" condition, so that a St. Mass was celebrated. The church received a comprehensive renovation under Jodocus Hermann Nünning in 1722/1723.

During the Seven Years' War the church served as a warehouse in 1762, and in 1779 it was desecrated by Prussian troops. In 1809 the church lost its actual purpose as a place of worship when the French converted it into a magazine. From then on it only served profane purposes and until 1945 housed the fire engines and extinguishing equipment. It was popularly called Brandkiärke .

The Diocese of Münster administrative suggested in 1820 to the reconstruction of the church to a poorhouse. According to the plans, a blanket should be put in place. Towards the end of the century it was thought of as a gym. Both plans were not implemented. With the air raids from March 21 to 23, 1945, the church was destroyed except for the surrounding walls.

In 1948, the rescue and maintenance of the building fabric began. In connection with the construction of the town hall, the monument was included in the overall concept and restored in 1952/1953. By adding a ceiling, a stylish space was created for the council meetings. The local history museum was housed on the ground floor until 1986.

The north and south sides of the building are made of glazed bricks as a display gable with blind arcades , arched friezes and diamond patterns. They represent one of the most important Gothic brick church facades in northwest Germany, where this architectural style was formative. It is not known when the building was equipped with this facade. One consideration means that John Walling , the 1433 Borkener Remigius Church from Pope Eugenius IV. To collegiate let rise in Luebeck for provost had been elected. This connection could have imitated the brick Gothic architectural style in the Lübeck area in Borken.

"St. John's Bell"

After the Thirty Years War , a bell could not be hung in the tower again until 1656 on "silent Friday". In 1693 the neye Heilig gest Klocke was cast and hung in 1694. It weighed 135 pounds and its inscription reads: ANNO 1693 AD MAJOREM DEI GLORIAM THOMAS DE CORTE DECANUS; NICOLAUS POTGIESER; JOHANN HENRICK ARNING CONSULES JOHANN WILHELM BOCKTENKINCK PROVISOR (“In 1693, to the greater glory of God, Thomas de Corte, Dean, Nikolaus Potgieser, Johann Heinrich Arnink, Mayor, Johann Wilhelm Bocktenkinck, Provisional”).

In 1941 the historic bell had to be delivered for war purposes. She was spared the fate of the meltdown and came back on August 6, 1947. It is rung annually on Midsummer Day (June 24th) for the meeting of the neighborhoods at 1 p.m.

Integration of the building in the "Forum old town hall Borken" project

With the help of the structural funding program of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the new cultural center Forum Altes Rathaus Borken , abbreviated FARB, is emerging from the building ensemble of the Holy Spirit Church and the Old Town Hall . It will house the city museum and the city administration's tourist information office. The renovation work began in 2016. The ground floor of the Heilig-Geist-Kirche - currently still leased to a gallery owner - is integrated into this concept, so that a new cultural location with space for art, history, culture and leisure is created.
