Life

Jodocus Hermann Nünning was the son of Heinrich Nünning , Gaugraf zu Bentheim and Schüttorf. He attended lectures in philosophy in Münster, attended the University of Helmstedt , then studied law in Prague . He then undertook a multi-year cavalier tour that took him via northern Italy, central Italy and southern France to Orléans , where he earned his doctorate. After a stay in Brittany, Paris and the Netherlands, he returned after five years via Aachen and Cologne. Soon another trip took him to Vienna, Berlin and Frankfurt an der Oder, where he heard legal and historical lectures. In 1704 he returned to Schüttorf, but turned down the judge's office offered to him. In 1706 he became a scholar of the Vreden Abbey , where he lived until 1752, most recently as the Abbey Senior.

In Vreden Abbey, Nünning dealt with geographical and historical studies, especially about the Münsterland and Charlemagne. In 1743, the Elector of Cologne awarded him the title of Council of Churches for the organization of the Borken Archives. In addition, he put on a comprehensive book collection, which in the end comprised 9,000 titles. It was intended by Nünning as the basis for a university library in Münster , but after his death it remained in private ownership (Archive Haus Ruhr / Alvinghoff, Bösensell).

He worked with Johann Heinrich Cohausen , personal physician to the Bishop of Münster and medical satirical writer, and the physician and personal physician from the Electorate of Trier, Salentin Ernst Eugen Cohausen , and published some works with them.

In 1752 Nünning laid down his canonical. He spent the last months of his life at Haus Wiekinghoff in Borken- Grütlohn , where he died in 1753. His grave is in the Johanneskirche in Borken .

Jodocus Hermann Nünning was the namesake of the Nünning-Realschule in Borken and is the namesake of the Jodocus-Nünning-Comprehensive School in Borken and of the Jodocus-Hermann-Nünning Prize awarded by the Westmünsterland Regional Studies Institute .
