Holy Spirit Church in Tychy

The Holy Spirit Church (Polish: Kościół Ducha Świętego ) is located in Tychy in the Polish Silesian Voivodeship . It was built by the architect Stanisław Niemczyk from 1979 to 1983 and is one of the most important examples of critical regionalism in Poland.

architecture

The Heilig-Geist-Kirche has the shape of a crooked truncated pyramid with a rectangular floor plan, with the long sides having the largest dimensions. The shape of the church is reminiscent of a tent. On the rectangular top surface of the truncated pyramid there are four small turrets, each in one of the corners of the surface, as well as a small, centrally positioned, irregular pyramid . The roof and the turrets are covered with sheet copper . A few meters to the north-west of the main building is the freestanding bell tower made of brick masonry .

Despite its tent-like shape, the interior of the church could be built using reinforced concrete girders without any disturbing support beams. The wooden ceiling contains paintings by Jerzy Nowosielski .

The Holy Spirit Church is characterized by a modern, but still clearly Polish character. Although the church is one of the interesting churches that were built in socialist Poland , the unusual shape of the building also led to public debate.
