Say

There are two legends about Heiligenberg:

1. A farmer's cows are sick and the farmer promises to sacrifice a calf if his cows get well again. All animals get well and the farmer later goes to church with a calf. But at the entrance the calf is too bad for him and he wants to turn back, but the calf sinks into the threshold with its hooves. The calf is only released again when the farmer gives it to the church. The stone was then inserted into the chapel wall where it can still be seen.

2. A man dreams that he would learn something important on the stone bridge in Regensburg. He sets out on the long walk, but on the bridge he can't see anything special. After a while the bridge keeper asks him what he is doing. He explains the thing about the dream, but the guard says he dreamed that a treasure was to be found under an elder bush on the holy mountain. But he doesn't believe in the dream. The farmer goes home and finds the treasure under an elder bush in his garden. He used the money to build today's church.

art

The origins of the church are likely to date from the 15th century, while the nave and furnishings were built in the 18th century. The high altar, equipped with four winding columns, represents St. Erasmus in the middle shrine , flanked by St. Benedict of Nursia and Bernhard of Clairvaux . Among the numerous votive pictures are seven oil paintings from around 1680 with detailed accompanying texts. The grain that was sacrificed was kept in a wooden chest in the chapel next to the church.
