Heart of Jesus in Bitola

The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus ( Macedonian Црква Пресвето Срце Исусово ) is the co- cathedral of the Diocese of Skopje in North Macedonia . It is located on Schirok Sokak Street in the South Macedonian city of Bitola .

A chapel was built by the Vincentians in 1857 at the point where the Sacred Heart of Jesus rises today , as immigrant consulate members and merchants and their families needed Roman Catholic pastoral care. For this purpose, the Hotel Locanda, which had been used by the Turkish army until then, was bought up by Father Juan Jose Lepavek from Redzep Pascha, the Vâli (governor) of Monastir . In 1870 a new church was built in the baroque style, but it burned down in 1900. In 1909 the building that still stands today was finally built in the French neo-Gothic style.

The co-cathedral has three altars, the Gothic-German main altar made of wood comes from Munich . The fountain was built by the Macedonian engraver George Karadschow; the church tower was built between 1938 and 1940 and was a gift from Slovak believers.
