The Roman Catholic Diocese of Skopje ( Latin Dioecesis Scopiensis ) is in northern Macedonia located diocese of the Roman Catholic Church , based in Skopje .
It was built on May 25, 2000 by Pope John Paul II and is subordinate to the Bosnian Archdiocese of Vrhbosna (Sarajevo) as a suffragan .
The territory of the Diocese of Skopje coincides with the territory of the Republic of North Macedonia . According to Vatican Radio, there are currently (2005) 20,000 Catholics in North Macedonia, around half of whom belong to the Byzantine rite .
With Kiro Stojanov , a Slavic Macedonian was appointed bishop of Skopje for the first time in July 2005 . He also holds the office of Bishop of the Eparchy of the Annunciation Strumica-Skopje (for Catholics of the Byzantine Rite).
Only a few priests are available for pastoral care. There are also three to four dozen Catholic nuns in North Macedonia. Canonically established parishes are only found in Skopje near the Sacred Heart Cathedral (with branches in Tetovo , Veles , Štip , Prilep , Gostivar ) and in Bitola near the Co-cathedral of the Sacred Heart (with a branch in Ohrid ).
Historical development
Already in the 4th century the bishopric of Dardania was built and made an archbishopric, renamed the Archbishopric of Skopje in 1656 , it was the seat of a metropolitan .
The Catholic Archdiocese of Skopje, which encompassed large parts of the Western Balkans, existed more on paper than in reality . The Holy See only sometimes appointed bishops for Skopje, in between there were always long vacancies . In addition, many bishops did not even reside in North Macedonia. It was only at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries that the situation of the mission district could be stabilized more or less. With papal decree Pius XI. On October 29, 1924, the Archdiocese of Skopje was converted into a simple diocese , the title went to Belgrade . On October 2, 1969, Pope Paul VI united . the diocese of Skopje with the historical and later titular diocese Prisriana to the diocese of Skopje-Prizren. The bishopric of the Serbian bishop was Skopje. The Albanian auxiliary bishop sat in Prizren ( Kosovo ), where more than ninety percent of the 50,000 Catholics of the diocese lived. The renewed separation took place in 2000 because of the newly drawn political borders as a result of the Yugoslav wars; the Prizren Apostolic Administration , which was elevated to the status of the diocese of Prizren-Pristina in 2018, was established for Kosovo .
