The eparchy Annunciation Strumica Skopje ( lat. : Eparchia Beatae Mariae Virginis in Caelum Assumptae Strummnitzensis-Scopiensis until May 31, 2018 Apostolic Exarch of Macedonia ) is a in northern Macedonia located Eparchy for Catholics of the Byzantine Rite , based in Skopje . Most of the believers are Albanians .

history

After the union of some priests between 1859 ( Union of Kilkis ) and 1861, a jurisdiction of the Bulgarian Catholic Church was created in 1881 . The jurisdiction comprised two Apostolic Vicariates Macedonia and Thrace . The Apostolic Vicariate was dissolved in 1922 or, according to other sources, in 1924.

On January 11, 2001, Pope John Paul II established the Apostolic Exarchate for Catholics of the Byzantine Rite in Macedonia from the cession of territory by the Diocese of Križevci . Formally, the Macedonian Greek Catholic Church is a church in its own right (sui iuris) and is one of the Greek Catholic Eastern Churches . However, the Macedonian exarchate does not have the degree of autonomy that distinguishes most of the churches united with Rome: on the one hand, the apostolic exarch is appointed directly by the Pope, and on the other hand, this episcopal office is currently (2004) in personal union by the bishop of the Roman Catholic diocese of Skopje .

On May 31, 2018, Pope Francis elevated the exarchate to the rank of an eparchy and appointed the previous exarch Kiro Stojanov as the first diocesan bishop of the eparchy.
