The home of Croatian artists

The Home of Croatian Visual Artists ( Croatian Dom hrvatskih likovnih umjetnika ), also popularly known as the mosque (Džamija) or Meštrović pavilion (Meštrovićev paviljon) , is an exhibition hall designed in 1938 by the international architect Ivan Meštrović , a former mosque and the current seat of 1868 founded Croatian Artists Association. It is located on the “Square of the Victims of Fascism” in the center of the capital Zagreb . The former mosque is considered an avant-garde project of the first half of the 20th century and represents a forerunner of well-known buildings of modern architecture around the world, such as the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City .

history

Originally intended for a statue for the Yugoslav King Peter I , the House of Fine Arts "Peter the Great Liberator" was built on the square of Ivan Meštrović . It was opened on December 1, 1938. The concept for this was drawn up in 1933. The building is circular and has a large and a smaller hall with a dome in the middle and a vestibule .

During the collaboration between the Croats and National Socialist Germany, the art gallery was converted into a mosque in 1941. The government of the Independent State of Croatia commissioned the architect Zvonimir Požgaj to redesign the interior into a Muslim prayer room, while Stjepan Planić added three minarets , each 45 meters high and with a pencil tip, to the building .

The building remained a mosque until the Communists came to power in 1945, after which the three minarets were demolished from 1947 to 1949 and the elaborate decoration destroyed. The architect Vjenceslav Richter designed the transformation into the Museum of the Revolution , which opened on April 15, 1955 and was dedicated to the partisans in World War II .

During the Croatian War in the course of the collapse of Yugoslavia , the Croatian Artists Association moved back to its place of origin in 1993.
