Walter Heimann worked for AEG in Berlin-Reinickendorf in the area of cathode ray tubes since 1931 , where he developed tubes for television technology. In 1946 he founded his company “Physikalisch-Technische Werkstätten”, later Heimann GmbH, in Wiesbaden, indicating at the same time that he wanted to produce something. At the beginning of 1970 Heimann GmbH had grown to around 500 employees. The activities in the field of image pickup tubes led to a technical collaboration with Siemens AG very early on . The increasing importance of image recording technology for industry and medicine made the contacts ever closer.

Heimann found a way to withdraw from active business life and to be able to ensure that his life's work is preserved: A merger with a majority stake in Siemens AG was finally agreed with effect from January 1, 1970. From then on, the development potentials of both companies were progressive mainly dedicated to the field of television recording technology. The company's founder, Heimann, died in 1981.

In 1993, the security technology division was taken over by Rheinmetall AG under the name Heimann Systems GmbH and relocated to its own subsidiary Aditron AG in March 2000. The turnover in 2001 was 167 million euros. In October 2002 the company was taken over by the Smiths Group for 375 million euros and is now part of the Smiths Detection division under the name Smiths Heimann GmbH. It develops and produces security technology such as baggage inspection systems and body scanners . Sales in the 2008/9 financial year amounted to EUR 219.2 million.

The part in whose hands TV recording technology is further developed was formerly called Heimann Opto and has been part of the US company PerkinElmer since 1992 . After the takeover, the company was called PerkinElmer Optoelectronics GmbH & Co. KG until 2008. Sales in 2008 amounted to 98.8 million euros. From 2009 the company was called PerkinElmer Technologies GmbH & Co. KG. Due to the financial crisis, sales in 2009 were only 78.3 million euros.

Both successor companies are based in Wiesbaden.
