The headquarters are in Waltham , Massachusetts. PerkinElmer Inc. is listed on the S&P 500 Index. "The Perkin-Elmer Company" was founded in 1937 by Richard S. Perkin and Charles W. Elmer, initially to develop optical components. In 1943, the company began developing analysis devices. In 1944, the first IR spectrometer that could be bought on the market was launched. Today PerkinElmer holds approximately 3,300 patents.

From 1954 to 2001 , analysis devices were also developed and produced in Germany at the Bodenseewerk Perkin-Elmer GmbH & Co. KG in Überlingen on Lake Constance.
