history

"A report of the" Supplement to the Radebeuler Tageblatt of August 25, 1910 " stored in the city archive shows that three Radebeul citizens," Gautzsch, Schwenke and Petzold ", in 1872 from" Gratitude for the happy return from the war in 1870 / 71 “each had planted a poplar.” Petzold in particular must have been grateful, as he had already taken part in the occupation of the Duchy of Lauenburg and Holstein during the German-Danish War of 1864 and in the German War of 1866 .

"Then in 1910, on the occasion of the fortieth anniversary of the battle of Sedan , which established the German victory and led to the establishment of the Empire, the memorial stone was erected next to the poplars by the military association ."

The stone was knocked over several times and one day it was gone. He was rescued and rescued by private individuals. Private donations made it possible for the Radebeul Association for Monument Preservation and New Buildings, together with the Radebeul Monument Protection Office, to re-erect the monument, which had been stored elsewhere for years, at the original location and to design the surroundings.

The traces of its years can be seen on the stone, the writing is almost illegible due to the years. In order to preserve the immediacy and originality of the stone, this writing was copied onto a plaque and attached. The original three poplars were felled in the 1960s. After the stone was re-erected, the city's garden and green space department planted three new poplars.

inscription

The stone bears the weathered, barely legible inscription on its sloping surface:

These three poplars
planted out of gratitude
for the happy homecoming
from the war
1870/71
three veterans out
Radebeul.
