Heimssýn

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heimssýn ( isl . World image ) is a cross-party Icelandic association Eurosceptics . It was founded in 2002 and wants to prevent Iceland from joining the EU . The purpose of the association is to "stimulate an open debate about Europe and international cooperation". The association's members come from most Icelandic parties, including many prominent active and former politicians. Heimssýn is a member of the international organization The European Alliance of EU-critical Movements (TEAM).

The association was founded by over 100 founding members in June 2002. A statement on the foundation emphasizes that Iceland, as a small, young nation, has enjoyed great success over the past century. Cooperation with organizations like the EU is important, but joining the EU is the wrong way to continue the Icelandic successes.

Management team

Heimssýn's founding chairman was Ragnar Arnalds , a former member of the Icelandic parliament Althing and Minister of Finance . He held office until 2009. The chairman as of June 2020 is Haraldur Ólafsson, who took office in March 2018. Other prominent members of the governing body were or are, among others, Steingrímur Hermannsson (former Prime Minister of Iceland ), Sigurður Kári Kristjánsson (MP for the Independence Party ), Árni Þór Sigurðsson (MP for the Left-Green Movement ), Illugi Gunnarsson (MP for the Independence Party), Ingvar Gíslason (former Minister of Education) and Bjarni Harðarson (MP for the Progressive Party ).
