The Heinrich-Laehr Park is located in the Berlin district of Zehlendorf . It is named after Bernhard Heinrich Laehr , a German doctor who founded a mental hospital in the 19th century , including on what is now the park area. The park is around 800 meters long and around 200 meters wide, making it one of the largest in the district.
history
Laehr bought land in Schönow in 1853 and founded a private sanatorium there for mentally ill women, the mental hospital “Schweizer Hof”. On the 270 hectare site, Laehr had extensive park and arable areas laid out. In 1906, a year after his death, the southern part of the complex was dedicated to him. His son continued the clinic until his death in 1929. The property then fell to the City of Berlin on condition that the area be used for social facilities. Nevertheless, a large part of the Swiss court was demolished. Residential houses for senior citizens, a senior citizens' home and the church college in Berlin-Zehlendorf were built . In addition to the already existing Heinrich-Laehr-Park, the Schönower Park with the grave of Heinrich Laehr as well as the Schweizerhofpark was created , the name of which is intended to commemorate the institution. In 1957, the district erected a sculpture made of artificial stone by Christian Theunert entitled Turtle Group in the park . In 1963 the area was declared a landscape protection area.
