Bernhard Heinrich Laehr (born March 10, 1820 in Sagan , Province of Silesia , † August 18, 1905 in Zehlendorf near Berlin) was a German psychiatrist and psychiatric historian .

Life

Bernhard Heinrich Laehr studied medicine in Berlin and Halle . He then worked as a doctor at the Francke Foundations in Halle. In 1843 he received his doctorate and from 1848 to 1852 received training as a psychiatrist at the provincial insane asylum in Halle-Nietleben . He came to Zehlendorf in 1852, where he bought land in the Schönower area in 1853 and founded the Schweizerhof mental hospital, a private hospital for mentally ill women.

He became internationally known through his work and was an honorary member of numerous scientific societies. In 1857 he took over the main editing of the general journal for psychiatry and psycho-judicial medicine published by him and other “insane doctors” in Germany, which existed from 1844 to 1937 . In 1891 Laehr received the title of professor. For many years he was a community representative in Zehlendorf.

After his death he was buried in a family grave in Schönower Park . The main building of the Schweizerhof was demolished in 1966 for the John F. Kennedy School . The Heinrich-Laehr-Park, the Laehrstrasse and the Laehr'sche Jagdweg in Berlin-Zehlendorf were named after him.
