The Schönower Park is located in the Berlin district of Zehlendorf . It is named after the Schönow location in which it is located.

history

The German physician Bernhard Heinrich Laehr acquired land in Schönow in 1853 and founded a private mental hospital for mentally ill women there, the "Schweizer Hof". Laehr had extensive parks and arable land laid out on the 270 hectare area. After his death in 1905, his son Hans continued the clinic until his death in 1929. The property was given to the city of Berlin to use the area for social facilities. Nevertheless, a large part of the Swiss court was demolished. Residential houses for senior citizens, a senior citizens' home and the church college in Berlin-Zehlendorf were built . Heinrich-Laehr-Park , Schweizerhofpark and Schönower Park were created on three open spaces . This is where Laehr found his final resting place. A sculpture Mournful Women by Gottlieb Elster adorns his grave monument. In the park there is also a pond and a playground with wooden play equipment, which takes up the theme of Hansel and Gretel .
