The John F. Kennedy School (short: JFKS , English John F. Kennedy School ) is a community school (with elementary school , secondary school and upper secondary school ) in the Berlin district of Steglitz-Zehlendorf .

history

Originally founded on October 11, 1960 in the premises of the Mühlenau School in Berlin-Dahlem as the German-American Community School , the bilingual , German - American comprehensive school was opened in 1963 after the assassination of the 35th US President in John F. Kennedy School renamed. In the same year she moved to the Teltower Damm in Zehlendorf on the site of the former Laehr Clinic, initially in temporary rooms. In 1966, in the course of a new building for the school, the stately, over one hundred year old central building of the Schweizerhof ensemble (Laehr Clinic) was demolished.

After German reunification in 1990 and the withdrawal of the Allied troops , the goals of the JFKS, which had previously been very much focused on reconciliation after the Second World War , were redefined.

The majority of the 1700+ students (57%) are German; a third are American and the rest are from a variety of other countries. The John F. Kennedy School employs 142 full-time and 32 part-time teachers. Of the 174 members of the faculty, 91 are German, 78 American and 5 from other countries (2009).

building

A new building was inaugurated in 1970 and further new buildings on the school premises, based on designs by the architect Harald Deilmann , followed in later years. The school is located on a modern campus spread over six main buildings and has 135 classrooms, nine science laboratories, three computer laboratories, two libraries, two sports halls and an extension for the arts.

The Reil house of the former Laehr Clinic (presumably) owned by Martin Gropius from 1854 at Teltower Damm 87, which is now the JFKS student administration , is a listed building.

particularities

The administration of the John F. Kennedy School consists of an American and a German principal of the elementary school as well as an American and a German director of the upper school. One of the four directors provides the headmaster.

You will collegially run the school in accordance with law and regulations, as well as the directions and decisions of the Educational Directorate (ED) of the John F. Kennedy School and the decisions of the JFKS School Conference and departments.

At the JFKS, teaching is bilingual in German and English . The school offers open all-day operation and is a school with a special pedagogical character . In addition to the German Abitur , the American high school diploma can also be obtained.

The SPD - politician and district mayor of Berlin-Neukölln , Martin Hikel , worked as a politics and mathematics teacher at the John F. Kennedy School from 2016 to 2018.

Bullying problems

The JFKS hit the headlines nationwide because a Jewish student who was reported under the pseudonym "Bruno" was anti-Semitic bullied by classmates so that he finally left the JFKS. The two “main culprits” have also had to leave school.
