biography

Heinrich Aebli studied biology at the University of Zurich and graduated with a doctorate. His main occupation was a cantonal school teacher and from 1968 to 1999 managing director of the Baeschlin bookstore; his first wife, with whom he was married for 41 years, belongs to the family that owns it.

At the Glarner Landsgemeinde 1970 he was elected to the government council and thus to the successor of the retiring Dietrich Stauffacher . He headed the police department and left after a year. 1986–2002 he was mayor of the canton capital, Glarus . He was also a member of the district administrator , the Glarus cantonal parliament , for several years .

The fact that General Alexander Wassiljewitsch Suvorov made a stop with his troops in the Glarus region in 1799 prompted Aebli to initiate a partnership between Glarus and Kobryn - where Suvorov owned a property. In 1990, after the Iron Curtain fell, Aebli expressed the desire to travel to Kobryn at a local council meeting. He was able to win two local men for his project. Today he is closely connected with this Belarusian city. Through his initiative, decommissioned vehicles and other technical systems are exported there. The Hotel Suvorov in Kobrin is also thanks to Aebeli. He has been married to a Belarusian woman for the second time since 2003 and lives with her in Glarus.
