Heinrich Behrens (veterinarian)

Heinrich Otto Wilhelm Behrens (born May 13, 1920 in Ohlum ; † March 10, 1997 ) was a German veterinarian.

Life

Heinrich Behrens was born as the son of the homonymous farm owner in Ohlum. In the first trimester of 1940 he began studying veterinary medicine at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Hanover . In 1940 he became a member of the Corps Normannia Hanover . In October 1944 he received the veterinary medical profession in Hanover and two months later became Dr. med. vet. PhD. He took part in World War II as a reserve veterinarian and was a prisoner of war from May to November 1945. In December 1945 he became a research assistant in the outpatient clinic of the University of Veterinary Medicine in Hanover. In October 1947 he moved to the medical forensic clinic. In 1950 he qualified as a Dr. med. vet. habil. and became a private lecturer for internal medicine at the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover. At the end of 1951 he passed the district veterinary exam. In June 1953 he became senior assistant. In October 1955 he was appointed director of the animal health office of the Hanover Chamber of Agriculture , which he headed until his retirement. In April 1956 he was appointed adjunct professor at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Hanover and in 1957 he was appointed chief agricultural officer.

Behrens read about animal hygiene and pig and sheep diseases. He is the author of textbooks on sheep breeding as well as on pig and sheep diseases, which have appeared in repeated editions.
