Calum Gourlay
Calum Gourlay (* 1986 in Glasgow ) is a Scottish jazz bassist.
Live and act
Gourlay grew up in Glasgow and Fife ; As a child, he first learned the cello before switching to the double bass at the age of 14 . He was a member of the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Tommy Smith . In 2006, he lived in New York, where he met John Escreet and Seamus Blake recorded (Rooftop Adventures) . He then studied in London at the Royal Academy of Music Jazz (graduating in 2008) and also worked as a freelance musician and music teacher. With his graduation he was awarded the Benjamin Dollinger Prize and a scholarship (Yamaha / Classic FM Jazz Scholarship) . In 2009 he was a member of the Kit Downes trio , whose album Golden was nominated for the Mercury Prize . He also played in the formation of Aquarium , the George Crowley Quartet, Dave Hamblett , Martin Speake , Stan Sulzmann and with his own quintet, the Freddie Gavita (trumpet), George Crowley (tenor saxophone), James Maddren (drums) and Gareth Lockrane (flutes ) belong. In the field of jazz he was involved in twelve recording sessions between 2006 and 2013. Currently (2019) he plays in Brad Shepik's trio .
