For many years he was President of the Sheep and Goat Commission in the European Association for Animal Production (EVT).

Live and act

After attending school and a. in high school in Prague with certificate of maturity, war service, imprisonment, an agricultural apprenticeship and further school attendance in Hann. Münden , he successfully passed the general university entrance qualification examination. He then began studying agriculture at the University of Giessen (1949–1953). With the submission of his dissertation fattening experiments with sucking merino sheep and crossbreed lambs , he received his doctorate as Dr. agr. in Giessen.

After his time as an agricultural trainee and state examination in 1955, Waßmuth was entrusted with the establishment and management of the first European fattening research institute for sheep breeding at the Hesse Chamber of Agriculture and Forestry in Kassel . In 1957 he returned to Prof. Leopold Krüger as an assistant at the animal breeding institute in Gießen.

The habilitation for the subject animal breeding took place with the writing The selection on shear yield and wool properties with multiple use of the sheep at the Justus Liebig University Gießen 1962. In 1963 he became a guest lecturer for one year at the EGE University Izmir (Turkey), and from 1964 he was senior assistant, lecturer and adjunct professor for animal breeding in Giessen .

In 1968 he followed the call to Kiel University as Scientific Councilor and Professor of Animal Breeding. In 1969 he was recalled as professor for animal breeding and domestic animal genetics and director of the institute of the same name at the agricultural faculty of the University of Giessen. He refused a later renewed call to Kiel.

For over two decades he was in charge of the University of Giessen several times as vice dean and dean and director of the institute. Waßmuth is married to Bärbel Waßmuth; both have a daughter and a son.

Appreciation

In addition to general animal breeding, the focus of Waßmuth's work was, in particular, research into the genetic basis of important breeding relationships. He paid particular attention to sheep breeding. He was the author and co-author of around 400 scientific and practical publications, supervised 80 dissertations and 4 habilitations. The 32 applications for research projects submitted by Waßmuth to the German Research Foundation (DFG) were approved so that studies could be organized that could not have been carried out without these additional funding opportunities.

Particularly noteworthy are:

The 1/20 translocation of the sheep and its consequences (most important employee Birgit Glahn-Luft) and the first goat boy in the world to be carried by a sheep (most important employee Sabine Meinecke-Tillmann).

The Sheep Breeding Textbook (by Heinrich Behrens ), 3rd revised. Ed. By Rudolf Waßmuth, Hamburg & Berlin: Parey, 1973, 303 p., 166 Ill u. graph. Darst .; 4., completely reworked. Ed., 1976, 367 p .; 5., rework. Ed., 1979, 366 p .; 6., rework. Ed., With Reinhard Scheelje, 1983, 334 p. U. 134 ill .;

The introduction to the breeding, feeding and keeping of farm animals. With Hans Otto Gravert and Joachim Hans Less , Hamburg & Berlin: Parey, 1979, 317 p .;

Waßmuth was a member of the editorial board for 20 years, including six years as chief editor of the magazine for animal breeding and breeding biology .

On the occasion of his 80th birthday, he donated the Rudolf Waßmuth Prize for the promotion of young scientists, which has since been awarded to two candidates every two years.
