Hans Otto Gravert

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans Otto Gravert (born May 28, 1928 in Itzehoe ; † January 1, 2015 in Kronshagen ) was a German animal breeding scientist and university lecturer.

Live and act

Gravert was born the son of a farmer, graduated from the Kaiser-Karl-Schule in Itzehoe with the Abitur and studied agricultural sciences from 1948 to 1951 at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität in Kiel. In 1954 he received his doctorate here at Werner Kirsch Dr. agr. This was followed by studies at the Agricultural College in Uppsala with Ivar Johansson and at the Iowa State University in Ames (Iowa, USA) with Jay Lush to expand knowledge about the application of population genetics in animal breeding. Then Gravert underwent training and the exam as an assessor for animal breeding.

In 1956 he became an assistant - later senior assistant - at the Institute for Animal Breeding and Animal Husbandry at the University of Kiel (Joachim-Friedrich Langlet) and completed his habilitation there in 1962. He was appointed private lecturer in 1963, and in 1967 as scientific councilor and professor. In the same year he took over the management of the Institute for Milk Production of the Federal Institute for Milk Research in Kiel (1968 as Managing Director) with the research station in Schädtbek and - from 1982 as honorary professor - held lectures on pet genetics at Kiel University until his retirement in 1993.

Gravert knew how to incorporate the theoretical models of population genetics into practice-oriented procedures for performance testing and breeding value estimation . In particular, he dealt with the establishment and use of test stations for cattle to record and evaluate fattening and meat performance. He also included indirect, economically important characteristics such as the feed intake capacity of cows, examined the effect of genotype and husbandry on the quality of dairy products and researched new test parameters. By expanding the Schädtbek research station, he was able to carry out numerous cross-breeding experiments with other dairy cattle breeds and origins as well as genetic studies on identical twins. In addition, there were studies with new feed, feed additives, genetically engineered performance enhancers and the profitability of cattle production.

Gravert was involved in the amendments to the Animal Breeding Act of 1976 and 1989 as well as in the harmonization of animal breeding law within the European Community and the development of breeding programs. As the founder and head of the Interbull working group , he also ensured the international comparability of the nationally determined breeding values. He wrote 22 book chapters, over 100 scientific publications, 290 printed lectures and supervised 36 doctoral theses. He actively participated in numerous national and international committees. He headed the working committee of the German Society for Breeding Science for the Preservation of Genetic Diversity in Farm Animals and issued recommendations for the promotion of endangered breeds in horses, cattle, pigs, sheep and goats for 13 federal states from 1995 to 1999. From 1993 to 2007 he was chairman of the Wilhelm-Schaumann-Stiftung, where he supported the next generation of scientists from agricultural sciences and veterinary medicine, particularly in the processing of practice-related projects, and developed the "Hülsenberg Talks" into an interdisciplinary forum at a high scientific level. In addition to his professional activity, Gravert was still active in equestrian sports well into old age and was in charge of two clubs in Kiel for many years.

Gravert was politically active in the CDU , for which he ran unsuccessfully in the 1969 federal election on the Schleswig-Holstein state list.
