Heinrich Burchartz
Heinrich Burchartz (born December 27, 1864 in Cologne ; † August 9, 1938 in Berlin ) was a German engineer and professor of building materials science at the State Materials Testing Office in Berlin-Dahlem.
Life path
Born and raised in Cologne, Heinrich Burchartz went to Berlin for the summer semester of 1885 to study civil engineering at the Technical University of Berlin . In the same semester he became active in the Corps Saxonia-Berlin. After completing his studies, he moved to the Royal Examination Station for Building Materials in 1889 as Max Gary's assistant . After about ten years he was appointed permanent employee at the Royal Technical Research Institute, which the Royal Testing Station for Building Materials had meanwhile been incorporated into. In 1917 he was appointed professor. After Max Gary's death, he succeeded him as head of the building trade at the Dahlem Institute. After reaching retirement age, he remained in office for another three years until 1932. Lothar Krüger was appointed his successor .
Research priorities
Heinrich Burchartz's work almost completely encompassed the entire building material and material testing knowledge. His main scientific merit, however, was in the special field of binder science. In his book Luftkalke und Luftkalkmörtel , he described in detail the advantages and disadvantages of these traditional building materials compared to cement and concrete. He also researched cement and hydraulic aggregate, the trass, and the properties of sand-lime brick and blast furnace slag.
