Heinrich Eduard Gruner was the son of the civil engineer Carl Heinrich Gruner (1833–1906). From 1891 to 1897 (with a two-year break) he studied civil engineering at the ETH Zurich . After traveling through Europe and the USA, he was technical director at Basler Baugesellschaft in 1904/5. He then had his own engineering office in Basel (today's Gruner AG).

From 1908 to 1913 he planned the Laufenburg power station , followed by the arch dam at Lac de Montsalvens from 1918 to 1921 (supported by Alfred Stucky , who was employed in his office). From 1929 to 1934 he planned the Albbruck-Dogern power station on the Rhine .

He initiated the founding of the Research Institute for Hydraulic Engineering at ETH Zurich, which awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1930 . He founded the Swiss Dam Commission, which included Max Ritter and Alfred Stucky , among others . He was also on the commission for the second elevation of the Aswan Dam .

Since 1894 he was married to Jenny Kern. In 1933 he became an honorary citizen of Albbruck . His sons Eduard Gruner and Georg Gruner (1908-2004) also became civil engineers.
