Life

Jan van Collen and his wife Gryrtgin, citizen of Cologne, acknowledge Arnoult vam Brouwijler as the oldest provisional agent of the University of Cologne 25 guilders marriage grant from the poor daughters money of the Haich Foundation for their daughter Leentgin.

In 1429 he became a citizen of the city of Cologne, and in 1450 also a member of the city council . Since he was childless, he bequeathed his fortune to various church institutions in addition to his closest confidants, relatives and his nephew of the same name. In addition, he set up three highly endowed foundations . The “Foundation for Poor Daughters”, founded in 1452, was endowed with 12,000 guilders and enabled young women to marry or enter a monastery . Until the foundation was dissolved after 1798, several thousand young women were supported with a total annual sum of 600 guilders.

He felt a lifelong connection to his hometown Büderich, which is why he set up a foundation for poor daughters here that was based on the Cologne model. Two or three girls should be supported annually with an amount of 200 guilders. The money came from pensioners that he had bought from the cities of Zutphen , Arnheim and Nijmegen . As a result, there were repeated disputes between the city of Büderich and the three cities of Zutphen, Nijmegen and Arnheim over the payment of the pension.
