Heinrich Hirzel (church historian)

Heinrich Hirzel (born August 17, 1766 in Zurich or Weiningen ; † February 7, 1833 in Zurich) was a Swiss Reformed theologian , writer and university professor .

Life

Heinrich Hirzel came from a prominent family of politicians and scholars from Zurich. He grew up in Weiningen and in 1782 he moved to the Collegium Carolinum in Zurich. In addition to studying theology, he devoted himself to studying philosophy . In 1787 he received the in Zurich ordination and went as educators to Italy. There he worked mainly in Florence , but was also able to join a trip through Italy.

Hirzel returned to Zurich in 1790. There he took a reputation as a professor of church history at at the Carolinum. He held various professorships at the Philosophical-Theological University until he was promoted to Professor of Philosophy in 1809. At the same time he was canon at Zurich's Grossmünster until it was dissolved in 1832 .

Hirzel lived in the canons' apartment "at the green castle", which is said to have been a well-known place of intellectual exchange in Zurich. In 1814 he was appointed a corresponding member of the Società Italiana di scienze, lettere ed arti . He was very critical of the revolutionary machinations of his time.

His sons include the publisher Salomon Hirzel and the theologian Ludwig Hirzel .
