Heinrich II. (Harsefeld)

Heinrich II the Good († October 2, 1016 ) was a count on the Lower Elbe . He resided in Harsefeld, where he also founded a collegiate foundation to preserve his memoria .

Life

Heinrich was the eldest son of Count Heinrich von Stade and Judith von Rheinfranken. The nickname "the good one" is contemporary.

From about 975 he was Count in Harsefeld as his father's successor, in 993 Heinrich moved with his brothers Lothar Udo and Siegfried against the Slavic castle of Brandenburg . In 994 he and his brothers were taken prisoner by the Normans , but were released as a hostage after his son Siegfried was taken hostage.

In 1002 (or 1010) Heinrich founded a collegiate foundation in Harsefeld to atone for a murder by Udo and Heinrich von Katlenburg, probably his nephews. He had connections in the Anglo-Saxon area and had coins minted after the model of King Æthelred from 985 onwards . Heinrich was involved in feuds with the Ekkehardinern in Meissen , the Archbishops of Bremen and Bishop Dietrich von Munster , his nephew.

The day of his death is recorded in the necrology of the Church of St. Michael in Lüneburg on October 2nd. In the necrology of the cathedral chapter of Merseburg, the memorial entry for Heinrich can be found twice under October 1st, once with the addition servus Christi . His tomb was frequently visited. Heinrich's successor as Count von Stade was his brother Siegfried .

Marriage and offspring

Heinrich was married to a woman Mechthild from Swabia. Their son Siegfried was killed as a hostage by the Normans in 994 after his uncle Siegfried had fled.
