Heinrich Paasch (born January 7, 1835 in Dahme (Holstein) ; † March 25, 1904 in Antwerp ) was a German captain who became known for the standard marine work Vom Kiel zum Flaggenknopf , a trilingual dictionary of marine terms.

education and profession

Heinrich Paasch was already fishing with his father as a child. As a 13-year-old, he saw his father drown in a storm. After his confirmation he went to sea and served in the first German federal fleet until it was dissolved in May 1852. He then served as a sailor and helmsman on Danish war and merchant ships , then on German, Dutch and American merchant ships. In 1860 he came as a helmsman on board a Russian East Indiaman belonging to the White Sea Company and then led this ship as captain from 1862 to 1870. In this capacity, Paasch, who had acquired his knowledge exclusively through self-study, sailed around the world's oceans for eight years. In 1870 he settled in Antwerp , where he held the post of inspector of the English Lloyd for Belgium from 1873 . His job was to inspect more than 4,000 ships.

Life's work

Heinrich Paasch became internationally famous primarily as a nautical-technical writer . His work Vom Kiel bis zum Flaggenknopf is a richly illustrated dictionary that includes all maritime terms in English, French and German. The work was published for the first time in 1885 and is still a standard work today. In 1890 he also wrote a more comprehensive Illustrated Marine Encyclopedia .

In his home town of Dahme, he had Paasch-Eyler-Allee, named after him and his wife Pauline Eyler, built in 1903, which connects the town with the nearby forest. In his wife's hometown, Grube (Holstein) , the Paasch-Eyler-Platz was inaugurated in 1903 with donations from the couple.
