Heinrich Scharp
Heinrich Scharp (born February 15, 1899 in Höchst am Main , † December 25, 1977 ) was a journalist , historian and party official and a representative of political Catholicism .
After studying history, Scharp turned to political activity in the Center Party under the personal influence of Friedrich Dessauer . In 1921 he became party secretary of the Frankfurt city center, and in 1923 editor-in-chief of the left-Catholic Rhein-Mainische Volkszeitung published by Dessauer . In July 1933 he was in Gestapo custody for several days , shortly afterwards the state takeover of the Volkszeitung followed. Scharp then worked as a journalist in Rome, from 1936 as a correspondent for the Frankfurter Zeitung in Prague and from 1940 in Berlin. From 1945 to 1950 he was incarcerated in the Soviet Buchenwald camp . In 1950 he was sentenced to 18 years in prison in the GDR, but released in 1952 on the mediation of the former Chancellor Joseph Wirth . In the remaining years of his life, Scharp was active as a writer and historian. Among other things, he wrote several works on Frankfurt and Limburg church history.
Since 1919 he was a member of the Catholic student union KDSt.V. Badenia (Strasbourg) Frankfurt am Main .
