Heinrich Simon (Judaist)

Heinrich Simon (born on May 26, 1921 in Berlin ; died on February 6, 2010 there ) was a German Semitist and Judaist .

After graduating from the Jewish High School in Berlin in 1939, Simon had to emigrate as a Jew from Germany to Palestine, joined the British Army, but returned to Berlin in 1947, where he married Marie Jalowicz in 1948 . With her he had a son named Hermann in 1949 . He studied at the Humboldt University in Berlin , where he worked with Liselotte Richter in 1951 with a thesis The Ideological Function of the Old Stoa. The concept of nature in the stoic ethics was doctorate, 1956 he habilitated there for arabic philosophy. He initially taught as a lecturer in ancient and medieval philosophy as well as philosophy and culture of the Middle East, and since 1960 he has been a professor of Hebrew and Arabic studies at the Middle East Institute there. In 1986 he retired, but continued teaching until 1998.

He is buried next to his wife in the Jewish cemetery in Berlin-Weißensee .
