Heinrich Wittich (painter)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heinrich Ludwig Wittich (born December 19, 1816 in Berlin ; † April 9, 1887 there ) was a German painter .

Life

As the second son of the publisher, painter and etcher Ludwig Wilhelm Wittich (1773-1832), he initially studied at the Berlin Art Academy and then went to the Düsseldorf Art Academy for further training , where he was a student of Julius Huebner . He first became known with the half- length portrait noble boy with hunting rifle , which he presented at the Berlin art exhibition in 1834 when he was eighteen. In this romantic direction he created other pictures. The Düsseldorf School is still reflected in these works.

From 1837 to 1841 he stayed in Italy, where he traveled to Sicily. He drew several ancient murals in Pompeii . His later works are reminiscent of his experiences in those countries by capturing lovely costume pieces and folk scenes in an appealing landscape setting.

Furthermore, he occupied himself with archaeological studies, which he published in the Archäologische Zeitung , after which he was appointed a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute in 1866 .

He was married to Marie Gabler, granddaughter of the Protestant theologian Johann Philipp Gabler . He found his final resting place after being reburied in the south-west cemetery in Stahnsdorf .
