Heinrich Zimmermann (animal rights activist)

Heinrich Zimmermann (* 1887 or 1888 ; † 1942 ) was a German Jewish cynologist , editor, writer and animal rights activist. He was a key organizer of the movement to avoid the cruel treatment of animals. With the magazine Mensch und Hund , the leading magazine for dog lovers , which appeared in Berlin from 1923 and later became successful throughout Germany, and for which he was editor-in-chief, the idea of ​​animal welfare was spread among the population. After years of commitment to the introduction of a World Animal Protection Day, his proposal was accepted at the International Animal Protection Congress on May 8, 1931 in Florence. Since then, October 4th has been celebrated worldwide as World Animal Day. Heinrich Zimmermann was murdered by the National Socialists in a concentration camp in 1942 .
