Heinrich von Grüningen

Heinrich von Grüningen (* 13th century; † after 1326) was prior of the Dominicans in Esslingen am Neckar and from 1310 to 1326 provincial in place of Master Eckhart , who was elected by the provincial chapter of Teutonia but not confirmed by the general of the order .

origin

Heinrich von Grüningen was prior of the Dominican convent at St. Paul Minster in Esslingen, which was established before 1233 and which played a leading role among the Dominican monasteries in the Swabian region. Presumably he was a son of the judge Heinrich von Grüningen, who appeared in many Esslingen documents in the last third of the 13th century .

Provincial

In September 1310, Master Eckhart was elected provincial in absentia at the provincial chapter of the Dominican province Teutonia in Speyer , although he was already provincial of the order province of Saxonia created in 1303 by the division of the province of Teutonia . The election was not confirmed by the general master of the order, Aymerich von Piacenza, so that that same autumn a new election took place in Zurich , in which Heinrich von Grüningen was elected.

When Eckhart was charged with heresy in 1325 , Heinrich was on the side of his opponents. After consultation with the order general, Pope John XXII. This cleared Eckhart of all suspicions and ensured that Heinrich von Grüningen was removed from his office as Provincial of Teutonia in 1326 and replaced by Heinrich de Cigno.
