Heinz-Dieter Schmitz (born September 6, 1950 in Cologne ) is a former German soccer player . The defensive player played three league games for 1. FC Köln in the Bundesliga in the 1971/72 season .

career

Heinz-Dieter Schmitz was a member of 1. FC Köln when he was young. From 1967 he played in the A1 youth under coach Josef Röhrig . In his second A youth year, 1968/69, he had Jürgen Glowacz as a teammate . For the 1969/70 season he was accepted into the amateur team of FC under coach Gero Bisanz and then played alongside other players such as Karl-Heinz Goldau , Kurt Kowalski and Hans-Jürgen Lex . In his second amateur year, 1970/71, he and his team reached the runner-up in the Mittelrhein Association League. For the 1971/72 season he, like Paul Scheermann, was accepted by the amateurs in the professional squad. Under coach Gyula Lóránt , Schmitz was appointed to three Bundesliga appearances: On August 14, he won the home game against Werder Bremen (0-0) in the second half for Werner Biskup and on October 2 in a 4-3 home win against Borussia Mönchengladbach, Substituted for Johannes Löhr in the 75th minute . His third and last Bundesliga appearance took place on November 13, 1971 in a 3-1 home win against Hannover 96, where he spent the full 90 minutes as a full-back alongside Jupp Kapellmann , Wolfgang Weber , Harald Konopka and Heinz Simmet in front of goalkeeper Gerhard Welz was in action on the FC defensive. In the DFB-Pokal there were two more appearances on December 15, 1971 in the first main round against Essen FV 1912 (5-0) and on April 1, 1972 in the 3-0 defeat at Bayern Munich.

The defender was part of the professional squad of 1. FC Köln for three years, but was no longer used in competitive games in the last two rounds. He is said to have ended his sporting career in 1974.
