Heinz-Josef Große had already been deployed several times in work on the inner-German border and had also worked “hostile” towards the front blocking element. He was therefore considered trustworthy by the border troops. March 29, 1982 was his last day at work. The border guards B. and G., who had brought him lunch that day, left Große to follow a motorized Federal Border Police patrol and recognize their license plates, ranks and other details. Heinz-Josef Große took advantage of this fact and drove his tractor to the metal mesh fence, which at that time was still equipped with the SM 70 self- firing system. He put the shovel of the overhead loader on it and climbed over it over the front fence. Then he ran up a slope that still belonged to the territory of the GDR. The two soldiers of the border troops noticed that there was a great intention to flee, hurried back and opened fire, so that he fell to the ground a few meters before he reached West German territory. Then he was found dead. The action was observed by officers from the Federal Border Police, who could not intervene and had to watch the great bled to death.

Commemoration

A year after his death, a memorial cross was erected for him, which was inaugurated in the presence of the then Minister Heiner Geißler . The overhead loader used for the escape attempt is now in the Schifflersgrund border museum .
