Heinz Gernot

Heinz "Hein" Gernot (born February 2, 1921 in Andreashütte , Silesia , † October 12, 2009 in Cologne ) was a German artist and sculptor .

Life

Heinz Gernot moved to Cologne before the Second World War . Drafted into the Wehrmacht, he returned from Russia nine years after the end of the war as a late returnee . This time was formative for his further life and the urge to create as an artist. He studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy and made it to a master class . In 1956 he married Helga, a daughter of the sculptor Hermann Isenmann , the artistic and technical director of the academy's plaster workshop .

The focus of his life's work was on religious works of art in Catholic churches in West Germany. In the period from the 1960s to the beginning of the 21st century, he created over 150 church altars. His works can be found in churches from the Frankfurt area to the Lower Rhine .

Works

His most extensive works are in the Bonn Minster . Here he created a silver-plated side altar with ivory inlays, the shrine for Cassius and Florentius in the crypt , the baptismal font as well as portals, lamps and bars.

He created the altar, the baptism and the holy water stone for the church of St. Joseph in Cologne-Dünnwald . From Gernot come u. a. the altar and the baptismal font in the Church of St. Johann Baptist, Bergisch Gladbach - Refrath (consecrated 1968).

In addition to religious works, his work can also be found in public buildings in the Rhineland. So he created the bronze entrance door in Cologne City Hall . Overall, typical of his works is the use of different materials such as stone, wood, bronze, but also aluminum. Details made of enamel , ivory or rock crystal were often used.

Most of the sculptures he creates are privately owned by the family.
