from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heinz Vogel (born October 24, 1922 in Paplitz / Province of Saxony; † May 15, 1994 in Berlin ) was a German sports journalist .

Life

The active medium-distance athlete Heinz Vogel completed his traineeship as a sports journalist at the Berliner Zeitung in the GDR from 1949 . Soon he was also writing for West German newspapers - under the pseudonym Heinz Sperling for the specialist magazine Leichtathletik , under the pseudonym Stefan Henry for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ). After moving to the Federal Republic of Germany, Heinz Vogel joined the editorial team of the Sports Information Service (SID) in Düsseldorf in 1958 as the successor to Gustav Schwenk , where he soon became a member of the editorial board and made a name for himself as one of Germany's leading athletics experts. From 1972 to 1990 Vogel worked as editor-in-chief of athletics in Berlin. Vogel reported on all major sports competitions (World and European Championships, Olympic Games) of his time. In 1986 the German Athletics Association awarded him the Heinz Cavalier Prize (today DLV Media Prize).

Heinz Vogel was famous for the athletics archive he had compiled himself and his excellent memory for facts. He also made his archive available to science. The FAZ called him a “walking encyclopedia” in its obituary, but also praised his “humorous sarcasm”, which made him extremely popular among colleagues and athletes. Heinz Vogel introduced himself to an audience of millions in the TV quiz Der Große Preis by Wim Thoelke , where he appeared twice as an athletics expert.
