from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heinz Wiendl (* 1968 in Rötz ) is a German neurologist and university professor at the University Hospital in Münster . He is known for his work in the field of inflammatory diseases of the nervous system and particularly on multiple sclerosis .

Life

Wiendl studied psychology (1989–1990) and human medicine (1989–1996) at Duke University , North Carolina, the Basel Cantonal Hospital and the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg . In 1996 he received his license to practice medicine. From 1997 to 1998 he worked as a research assistant and research fellow at the Anatomical Institute of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg ( neuroanatomy and histology ) and at the Neurological Clinic Erlangen. This was followed by a stay as a DFG research fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Neurobiology , Martinsried (1998–2000). From 2000 to 2004 Wiendl was a research assistant at the Neurological Clinic of the University of Tübingen . There he completed his specialist training, which he completed in 2004, and was head of the junior research group for neuroimmunology (Interdisciplinary Center for Clinical Research (IZKF) Tübingen). After his habilitation (2004), he accepted a call to a C3 professorship for neurology with a focus on neuroimmunology at the Würzburg University Hospital . There Wiendl worked as a senior physician and head of the clinical research group for multiple sclerosis . In 2010 he was appointed director of the Department of Neurology - Department of Inflammatory Diseases of the Nervous System and Neuro-oncology at the University Hospital of Münster (UKM). Since 2013, Wiendl has been director of the Clinic for Neurology with the Institute for Translational Neurology at the UKM. In 2016 he was appointed to the Neuroscience Review Board of the German Research Foundation (DFG), and in 2019 he was re-elected for a second term (until 2021). The University of Sydney awarded him an honorary professorship in neurology in 2017.

Scientific contribution

Wiendl's research and clinical activities focus on inflammatory diseases of the nervous system. Using multiple sclerosis as an example, he examines aspects of immune regulation, the interaction of the immune system with the nervous system, and immune cell migration, and researches biomarkers that provide information on the prognosis and therapy of MS. The central topic is the understanding and development of immunotherapies for neurological diseases. He follows a translational approach. To this end, he set up a biobank in Münster. Wiendl was involved in the development of the novel monoclonal antibody daclizumab . He also built up the Clinical Competence Network Multiple Sclerosis (KKNMS). He is also the spokesman for the Transregio Collaborative Research Center 128 "Multiple Sclerosis" of the German Research Foundation and is a member of the steering committee of the Interfaculty Center "Cells in Motion" (CiM).

Membership in international scientific associations

Wiendl is a member of the following associations: German Society for Immunology (DGI), German Multiple Sclerosis Society (DMSG), German Society for Muscle Diseases (DGM), German Society for Neurology (DGN), International Society for Neuroimmunology (ISNI), Editorial Board of Public Library of Science (PLoS) ONE, Neuroscience Review Board of the German Research Foundation, Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and Fellow of the European Academy of Neurology (EAN), and the American Academy of Neurology (AAN).
